Ultratravel Summer 2010: Modernist Mustique
Given all the quirks and exuberant flourishes of most Mustique architecture, the house standing high on the northernmost reach of Macaroni Beach stands out as something special. Unapologetically modern, it finds its inspiration not in the vernacular styles of far-flung places, but in the work of early-20th-century architects such as Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. From a distance, its three-tiered roofs look like a stack of cantilevered trays; they are clad in white and stretch wide along the horizon.
The villa is called Taliesin, a name shared by a sixth-century Welsh poet and two homes built for Frank Lloyd Wright in Wisconsin (1911) and Arizona (1937). Designed by the Canadian architect Jack Diamond, its pure architectural style may at first seem offputtingly austere.
In fact, it is so completely appropriate that it is remarkable so few properties like it exist on the island. Any modernist at heart who is visiting Mustique will want to stay there.
Two of the basic tenets of modernist architecture are the creation of open living spaces and the removal of excessive ornamentation. These have been painstakingly adhered to at Taliesin, where the only walls to speak of are built into the hillside. Apart from the odd glass screen to act as a wind break, three full aspects of the main living and dining areas are completely open to the elements. The transition between inside and out is rarely made by way of a door, but signalled by a change in flooring material – from Welsh slate to travertine or ipe wood on the terraces, of which there are at least a dozen. What is so refreshing at Taliesin is the restraint, ensuring that nothing distracts the eye from the immense natural beauty of the location. No decorator has obstructed the sea views with “finishing touches”. There are no added frills to compete with the charms of the 10-acre estate, planted with rubber trees, fragrant frangipani and palms.

Bob Hagan: a great cocktail party to beat all
We were kindly invited by the guest to join with them in an evening of drink and party. Music and drink were incredible and so too was Laverne, the Butler who take care of all the needs of the guest. Wonderful, just wonderful.

Anonymous: The house is magnificent!
Dear Mr. Short,
My family and I rented your house over the holidays, and Laverne was kind enough to give me your contact details, so that I might send you this short note of thanks and congratulations. The house is magnificent and we all enjoyed it tremendously. We truly loved every aspect of it, and the staff were marvelous. Congratulations on having built one of the great houses we have ever seen, let alone had the pleasure of staying in. Our family made great use of it, and we look forward to repeating the experience next year.

Dan and Rachael: Sublime Time
We almost didn't write this review because we want to keep the house a secret for ourselves!
It's hard to find the words to describe the views from the house. We have been visiting Mustique for 8 years and this was by far the best house we have ever rented. We had access to a mule that we made full use of. The property is quite high and has a viewing platform that is sublime. We spent time enjoying the sun and the breeze, just gazing out over the Mustique beaches and bays.
Thanks so much for a lovely stay, we'll see you again
Kind regards

Colin and Joanna: Fantastic Stay!
We came to stay at Taliesin for a week and realised straight away we should have booked for a fortnight!. The house and gardens are truly stunning. The views from the whole house are exceptional, looking out across the best views on Mustique.
The staff made us very welcome from the moment they picked us up at the airport. Our room was beautiful and very comfortable. The kids loved the pool and there's even an air conditioned playroom for them, complete with a Wii to keep them occupied.
The house facilities are truly world class. A highlight for us was to watch a movie with the kids on the huge screen in the living room! The chef prepared us some fantastic meals over the course of the week. The whole house has a calm serenity about it. While we were there we hosted a party for our friends and family and we had a blast! The sound system is available all over the house and the extensive decks were fantastic. Also, there was a gentle breeze in most areas that was very welcome.Even by Mustique's high standards, this is an exceptional house and Jo and I will definitely book again.
Thank you so much for a truly fantastic stay
